Silence blankets the earth
Everything sleeps when the lights go out
All but the crickets; the mice; and the owls
Only the predators of the night
And me.
The moon glows overhead
I cannot sleep yet
Not until I'm ready for the morning
For teachers expectations
Exceed my limitations
And I won't finish homework until dawn.
The caffine burns a hole through my tongue
Another shot goes down
My heart is racing, my brain is slowing
I fidget more than I accomplish
Just hunker down and do the work
You're hearing nothing real
The light is bright to burning eyes
The warmth of bed is waiting
And here I sit writing longer
Until my body can go no more
For after all, I'm not alone
The silence still is with me.
